Boat races are an Integral part of Kerala culture. Paippad Boat race is one of the most famous and oldest water festivals in Kerala. Paippad Jalolsavam is three day water carnival in Paippad Lake, Haripad, Alappuzha District, Kerala,India which generally held on the month of August or September.

  

Most of the festivals in Kerala is based on some myths or legends. Paippad boat race is also started based on legends on approaching a whirlpool on kayamkulam Lake for retrieving the Subtahmanyan Idol.

 

Paippad boat race is the most number of snake boat participants after the Nehru Trophy Boat race. Apart from the exciting snake boat race one can enjoy beautiful and colourful water procession of boats.

 

WHEN IS PAIPPAD BOAT RACE ?

 

  This festival is held on the time of Onam Days in Kerala. As like most of the festivals in Kerala, the date is being calculated on base of Malayalam calendar. Usually It falls in August or September month in Georgian calendar. In 2020 Paippad Boat race will be held on 2nd September.

 

 STORY BEHIND IS PAIPPAD BOAT RACE

 

 There was 5000 years old Subrhmanyan temple there in Harippad village,which was under control of noble families called ‘Ooranma’ Family. They are decided to build a new big temple, while building the ‘SreeKoil’ of the temple , the elders in the ‘Ooranma’ family had a strange dream at the same time .  The dream was that, an subrahmayan four handed idol was present under the whirlpool of Kayamkulam Lake.


 Based on this dream villagers went to kayamkulam lake and found the whirlpool and retrieved the idol from the water.


 On return journey the villagers escorted in their boats to show the respect for the idol. The idol was installed on temple.


  The three days water carnival and boat race were started in remembrance of this event

Nearest railway station: Haripad, about 5 km.


Nearest airport: Cochin International Airport, about 85 km from Alappuzha.
