DAY OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S
The International Day of the
World's Indigenous People is observed every year to support and defend the
rights of the world’s indigenous population. The occasion also recognizes the
contributions and achievements that indigenous people put together for the improvement
of world issues such as environmental protection.
The day also aims for recognizing
and honoring of the strength, resilience, dignity, and pride of Indigenous
Peoples around the world.
WHO
ARE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Indigenous peoples are practitioners and inheritors of unique
cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained
cultural, economic, social and political individuality that are different from
those of the dominant societies in which they live. Regardless of their
cultural differences, indigenous peoples across the world shares familiar
problems associated with the protection
of their rights as distinct peoples.

INTERNATIONAL
DAY OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S HISTORY
On 23rd December 1994, the UN General Assembly
proposed that the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People should be
observed on 9th August
annually during the International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People.
The date marks the day of the first meeting, in
1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission
on the Promotion and Protection of Human Right.
