Even though some legal and social advances
by the past two decades, lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people keep on facing extensive discrimination and violence in many
countries. All this leads to exclusion and unfavorably affects both the lives
of LGBTI people as well as the communities and economies in which they live.
INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA,
TRANSPHOBIA AND BIPHOBIA
The
International Day against Homophobia (IDAHO) aims to raise awareness of Lesbian
Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGTB) rights violations and at the same time
promoting interest in LGBT and human rights.

WHY
INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA,
TRANSPHOBIA AND BIPHOBIA IS ON MAY 17
In Germany, May
17th had been unofficially labeled as a
sort of "Gay Day” and Written in
the date format as 17.5, which had a likely resemblance with Penal Code 175,
the rule dealing with homosexuality (homosexuals were called "one hundred
seventy-fivers").
INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA,
TRANSPHOBIA AND BIPHOBIA HISTORY
The idea of International
Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia was proposed in 2004, after a
yearlong campaign involving thousands of individuals and organizations from all
parts of the world succeeded in making the IDAHO initiative a reality.
The founder of the
day, Louis-Georges Tin was Chairperson from beginning until 2013. In 2009,
transphobia was added to the name of the campaign and in 2015 biphobia was
added too.
