WHAT IS WORLD PRESS
FREEDOM DAY
Every year, 3 May
is a date which intend to celebrate freedom
of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights.
The
day also provides an opportunity to:
- Celebrate
the fundamental principles of press freedom;
- Assess
the state of press freedom throughout the world;
- Defend
the media from attacks on their independence;
- Pay
tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

FREEDOM DAY HISTORY
World Press Freedom Day was first organized by the UN General
Assembly in 1993 following a proposal at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO's
General Conference in 1991.This day also marks the anniversary of Windhoek
Declaration.

Windhoek
Declaration, Its a statement of press freedom principles
set together by African newspaper
journalists in 1991 to promote, maintain and foster an independent and
pluralistic press. The day points out the importance of a free press for
developing and maintaining democracy in a nation, and for the economic development.
WHAT TO DO ON WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
·
Honor the media
professionals who risked or lost their lives in the line of duty.
· Arranging various
events such as art exhibitions, dinners featuring keynote speakers.
·
Awards nights to honor
those who risked their lives to bring news to the world.
·
Cultural performances
and demonstrations to round tables to determine the significance of press
freedom
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
In , the 25th celebration of World Press Freedom Day will be led by UNESCO. The UNESCO and the Government of the Republic of Ghana will be jointly organizing the main event and will take place in Accra, Ghana on 2 – 3 May.
WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY THEME FOR
2018
“Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule
of Law” is the theme for 2018 and
this will cover the
- Issues of media
- Transparency of the political process
- Independence and media literacy of the judicial system
- Accountability of state institutions towards the public
- Freedom of expression and information online.
- Risks of regulating online speech.
