WHAT IS
INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY
International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) ,it’s the day when the
world’s community recognize and pay tribute for those sacrifices that firefighters made to ensure
that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a
day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their
contributions.
WHEN IS
INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY
Every year International Firefighters’ Day is observed on 4th
May.
INTERNATIONAL
FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY HISTORY
Firefighters day was observed since 1999,after the tragic
death of five firefighters during a wildfire in Australia.During the operation
the direction of the wind changed suddenly and engulfed them in flames.
WHY ON MAY 4
May 4th was chosen because its the feast day of Saint
Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. Saint Florian eas said to be the
first commanding firefighters of an actual Roman battalion.
It is said that, Saint Florian used a single bucket of water
to save an entire burning village in Ancient Rome.
IFFD RIBBON
The IFFD ribbons are of red and blue
colors ,which represents the main elements firefighters work with –
red for fire and blue for water.
These colors are internationally recognized
as representing emergency service.
WHAT DO PEOPLE DO ON INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ DAY
- Pay tribute to the firefighters who lost their life while protecting the safety of us all.
- Support and appreciate the firefighters across the world.
- Wearing blue and red ribbons pinned together .
- Participating in events
- Recognise their level of commitment and dedication
- Say “Thankyou” to them.
- Help the firefighters to get medical treatment who got injured in the line of duty
- Donating money to the firefighters charities
