Holi celebrates mainly on northern side of India and some states in southern India.

Holi Rituals

It lasts for a whole night and a day, begins on the evening of the Full Moon day, which comes somewhere between the end of February and the middle of March.

The first evening is known as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi and the following day as Holi, Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti, Dhulandi, or Phagwah.

celebrations start on the night before Holi with a Holika Dhan where people gather, perform religious rituals in front of the bonfire, and pray that their internal evil be destroyed the way Holika , the sister of the Asura king Hiranyakashpu , was killed in the fire. The next morning is celebrated as Rangwali Holi festival of colors, where people throw each other with colors .

People will throws the colors each others and gather shares sweets and foods. They visits their families in the festival day. They make and drink Indian traditional drink called 'Bhang'.

Exiting Story behind Holi

Once there was a king named Hiranyakashyap. He ruled the entire kingdom of earth. He ordered everybody in his kingdom to worship only him. But his son, Prahlad became a very intense devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to worship his father. Hiranyakashyap tried several ways to kill his son Prahlad but Lord Vishnu saved him every time. Finally, he asked his sister, "Holika" to enter a dazzling fire with Prahlad in her lap. For, Hiranyakashyap knew that Holika had a blessing, whereby, she could enter the fire unharmed.

Holika influenced young Prahlad to sit in her lap and she herself took her seat in fire. The story has it that Holika had to pay the price of her sinister desire by her life. Holika was not aware that the blessing worked only when she entered the fire alone. Prahlad, who kept chanting the name of Lord Vishnu all this while, came out unharmed,. Thus, Holi derives its name from Holika. And, is celebrated as a festival of victory of good over evil.
